The Mississippi Delta

The Mississippi Delta is flat and fertile. Cotton and soybeans grow well into the fall. Many people think of the Delta and think of the Blues or Slavey or Casinos. It is all of those either in the present or the collective memory. There are ripples of restlessness that I felt subtly-mostly from young people. The older folks wondered why today's youth aren't more like them. Every driveway had at least one dog. Every town had a place where people gathered after work to talk, to smoke, to pass the time- It was often outside a market, or the back of a pick-up truck parked near the roadside. Photographed October 2013; March 2018; May 2019.
